- During the Old Kingdom Egyptians worshipped a sun god named Re
- During Middle Kingdom Egyptians associated Re with another god, Amon and called this god Amon-Re
- Pharaohs who were viewed as gods and kings, were believed to get their right to rule from Amon-Re
- 2 other gods that were important to Egyptians are Osiris and Isis
- Osiris ruled over the underworld and was also god of the Nile. He was believed to control the annual flood that made the land fertile
- Isis was believed to have first taught women to grind corn, spin faux, weave cloth, and care for children
- Amenhotep IV worshipped a minor god named Aton instead of Amon-Re and ordered all priests to worship only Aton and no one else
- Priest of Amon-Re resisted and the people along with the Nobles deserted the Pharaoh because he neglected his duty of defending the empire
- Egyptians believed that Osiris and Isis had promised them eternal life after death
- Egyptians relied on the Book of the Dead which contained spells, charms, and formulas for the dead to use in the afterlife
